Gang Awareness Show with Lou Savelli

March 29th, 2006

Gang Awareness Show: March 29th, decorated NYPD office Lou Savelli, who was in the top 10 of the NYPD’s most effective leaders, was on Shannon’s Corner and I hope you heard him. He had quite a lot to say and we should all be listening. His citywide gang unit was awarded the The Most Effective Gang Unit in the US, by the National Gang Crime Research Center and he knows what we should be aware of in our communtiy, schools and with our children. But you don’t have to be a parent to perk your ears up and listen. This is a community problem and it can affect everyone’s quailty of life.

One of the most important things that Lou said was to contact the police if you suspect gang activity or find grafetti on your property or somewhere in your area. Take a picture of it - and Contact the Police - even if it seems benign. It may not be. What seems jibberish to us may be a code to other gang members in the area.

Lou sent me some important points to be aware of for all us and some warning signs for parents. I will try to post all he sent, but if I can’t I will condense it for all to read. In the meantime keep your eyes open and love your kids. The more they feel you understand them and that they belong in a safe and loving family, the less suseptable they are to negative and dangerous outside influences and peer pressure.

Etiquette Essentials Show

March 22nd, 2006

Jacqueline Whitmore, Author of Business Class: Etiquette Essentials for Success at Work.

Jacqueline is the founder of the Palm Beach School of Etiquette in Palm Beach Florida and is quite informative on what we should and - more to the point - what we should not do in business settings, including those that seem social.

For example, follow the lead of the whoever asked you out to a business meal. If they order an apetizer - fine , you can too. If they don’t - neither should you. The one who is left eating is going to be uncomfortable. The same goes with alcohol and other rather obvious eating issues.

Her book is about more than the art of the meal. She talks about customs (which hand do those in Arab countries use for hygiene and cannot be used for greeting? hint: it begins with L), dressing, networking, cell phone etiquette, handshaking protocol and much more.

To find out about the classes she offers, her appearances, to order the book or to contact Ms. Whitmore go to her website, www.etiquetteexpert.com.

Hudson Valley Protective Services Show

March 15th, 2006

March 15th ~ Today (March 15th) on Shannon’s Corner (from 1-2 WTBQ am 1110)Hudson Valley Protective Services talked about gang awarness here in the Hudson Valley. Think it is not a problem? Think again - it has come here and we need to be aware of it - all of us! There is quite a bit to know so I will be doing a full hour show on Gang awareness sometime in the next few weeks. Will keep you posted, but in the meantime - stay aware and notice everything on your children and all the kids in the schools. For more information about gangs and about Hudson Valley Protective Services contact them at www.hvps.us.

I have attended a seminar in gang awarness and was astounded. You should do the same. If you want to have one at your school or organization HVPS gives them. So call and find out the details. It is an eye opener!

For more information and statistics about gangs go to www.iir.com/NYGC - it is the National Youth Gang Center.

My guest Bob Rahn (CEO of HVPS) and Kim Anklin were great and also talked about workplace violence, cold case investigations (which they are experts at), child and teen safety and how you can hire HVPS to help with these and any other community safety issue.

You can contact HVPS at 845-781-SAFE or www.hvps.us
