Gang Awareness Show with Lou Savelli

March 29th, 2006

Gang Awareness Show: March 29th, decorated NYPD office Lou Savelli, who was in the top 10 of the NYPD’s most effective leaders, was on Shannon’s Corner and I hope you heard him. He had quite a lot to say and we should all be listening. His citywide gang unit was awarded the The Most Effective Gang Unit in the US, by the National Gang Crime Research Center and he knows what we should be aware of in our communtiy, schools and with our children. But you don’t have to be a parent to perk your ears up and listen. This is a community problem and it can affect everyone’s quailty of life.

One of the most important things that Lou said was to contact the police if you suspect gang activity or find grafetti on your property or somewhere in your area. Take a picture of it - and Contact the Police - even if it seems benign. It may not be. What seems jibberish to us may be a code to other gang members in the area.

Lou sent me some important points to be aware of for all us and some warning signs for parents. I will try to post all he sent, but if I can’t I will condense it for all to read. In the meantime keep your eyes open and love your kids. The more they feel you understand them and that they belong in a safe and loving family, the less suseptable they are to negative and dangerous outside influences and peer pressure.
