KidsHealth & Soul Mate or Cell Mate

October 24th, 2007

No doubt you have now heard about this infection (MRSA) that is spreading around and popping up at schools, but what do you REALLY know about it? Could you or your child be at risk? Is it in our backyard or school? Has it always been around and why now all the fuss?

Well, I am not an alarmist, but I would like to know more information on this so I am aware of what - if anything - I should be looking out for or doing. My friend’s son got this and it was quite devastating. Listen today to Dr. Hemant Sharma from KidsHealth.org (great website and organization -take a look www.kidshealth.org) as he explains MRSA to us and what we should know. Knowledge is the most important tool.

Also author Jackie Woods (www.jackiewoods.org) will be joining me to talk about her new book on relationships - Soul Mate or Cell Mate: A Guide to Healthy Relationships which I am interested in hearing more about. Gee sometimes our soul mate does feel like a cell mate - even if we don’t want to admit it! Join me today & don’t forget to

STRAIGHT TALK ABOUT SCHOOLS: 101 Q&A’S FOR PARENTS

October 17th, 2007

So terrific to have author and educator Judy Molland join me. Her book, Straight Talk About Schools (to get a copy go to www.judymolland.com or bookstores) is a book that every parent should have. Most of us aren’t teachers and don’t know as much as we think we do - or should- about how the school system is run. Yes, we know a lot, but Judy tells you everything you may ever need or want to know. Are you ready for your child’s parent-teacher conference? Do you know what you want to discuss and what your child wants you to talk about with the teacher? Well these are things you should know before you go and there are things you should do during and after as well. So listen in today so you can learn how to really Make Good Choices!

Is Your Child a High Ability Learner?

October 10th, 2007

Do you have a gifted child? It is reassuring to know that learning comes easy and you are grateful, but do you wonder what you should do to make sure that he or she is getting the right attention at school, is in the right program or the right school?

Most educators talk about our children who need help learning and making sure they are up to their grade level, but routinely ignore the 2.4 million (a conservative “low” number from Duke University)gifted and talented students in the U.S. Yes, some students struggle to retain the knowledge necessary for their grade level, but smart students struggle because they are bored and wait for challenging, rigorous relevant instruction that nurtures their potential - and they often don’t ever get it.

Join me today to discuss this with Robin Schader, Ph.D., assistant research professor at the NEAG Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development at the University of Connecticut and parent resource specialist for the National Association of Gifted Children www.nagc.org.

Dr. Schader, who was very informative and so helpful, talked today about many issues on this topic and acceleration (skipping grades) was one of them. She mentioned this website: http://www.nationdeceived.org/ for listeners to access for more information. If this is a consideration in your child’s school life, I suggest you take a look at this and learn all you can, it will help you make good choices ~

Too Many Meds for Young Kids?

October 1st, 2007

If you saw Katie Couric’s story on 60 Minutes Sunday about the four-year-old who died from an overdose of psychiatric drugs, you can’t help but wonder why so many children under six  - an estimated one million in the US- are on these drugs. Well, it is a problem but as a parent there are things you can do to make sure your child is diagnosed correctly and hopefully - not over medicated. One thing my guest, Dr. Donna Hallas, suggested to do is have a “pediatric home,” which is a permanent pediatrician practice that your child always goes to. And talk therapy along with medication is always helpful. For more information ask your doctor, but remember that you have a say as well and that you are your child’s best advocate. Listen, learn be patient and if your child is on medication, make sure he or she is carefully monitored.

Sunday October 7th don’t forget the Autism Move-a-Thon of Orange County at Thomas Bull Memorial Park from 10 am - 3pm. Thanks to Frank Fornario for having this on his show this week - and hopefully we will see you there and don’t forget to Make Good Choices ~
