As a woman I find it especially important that we all get the health care we need. Dr. Shaffer writes and lectures extensively on access to health care, women’s health and globalization. She served as senior health policy advisor to U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone from 1992 to 1995 and  is on the executive board of the American Public Health Association.

Today is the anniversary of the Virginia Tech shootings. A sad memory for this country and a tragic one for the families who lost loved ones and those who were injured. An unbearable sadness. But why do things like this keep happening and what can we do about it? I have had many experts on this topic on to discuss this and one of them is Daniel Gross who is the co-founder of PAX, Real Solutions to Gun Violence (www.paxusa.org) and creator of SPEAK UP a terrific school violence prevention program that includes 1-866-SPEAK-UP,  a free national hotline for students to call anonymously to report weapon threats.
