Update on Preparing for Pandemics and Brooklyn Botanic Garden New Tree Book and Sale

April 30th, 2009

Joining me today will be Verona Fonte, PhD., who I interviewed about pandemics a few years ago. And while the swine flu is not a pandemic, today she will talk about what we need to know about all of this, what we need to plan for, how to put it all into perspective and not let fear get a hold of us. Her book, BirdFlu: What to Do, Prepare to Survive, (www.birdfluwhattodo.com) gives us information that we are all going to need - maybe not now - but in the future. It seems that pandemics, whether they be swine flu or bird flu are imment and we need to prepare. Listen in today and learn what she has to say so you can make good choices ~

Also joining me will be Gina Ingoglia from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden with her new The Tree Book for Kids and Their Grown-ups, which is wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated by Gina. Great Book! And please note that the BBG is having its annual plant sale next week on Wednesday May 6th from 9-7 and on Thursday the 7th from 9-to noon with a members only sale on the 5th starting at 4:30. There will be over 20,000 plants for sale. For more information contact the BBG or just go and get some wonderful plants at great prices.

Award Winning Children’s Book Author Patricia Reilly Giff

April 10th, 2009

I want to see children curled up with books, finding an awareness of themselves as they discover other people’s thoughts.”

That is a quote from children’s book author Patricia Reilly Giff who has written more than 60 books for young readers. She has received two Newbery Honor Awards for her middle-school aged fiction and is currently nominated for an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers Association for her new book Eleven. Kids, including mine, love her books. My daughter read a few of her books two years ago and still talks about them. She has a way with children - of all ages - as she understands them instinctually. As a teacher and an author her new book Eleven also deals with reading disabled children and explores what it is like for them.  It is a suspenseful mystery, which is not always her genre, and one that keeps kids glued to the book.  One of her books, Pictures of Hollis Woods was made into a movie with Sissy Spacek.

Listen in today to learn more about Patricia Reilly Giff or go to her website at Random House at www.patriciareillygiff.comor www.randomhouse.com/teens to learn more and order some books - your kids will thank you for making good choices ~

Perfect Kid? Don’t think so

April 2nd, 2009

Are you getting just a little sick of ‘designer celebrity kids’ who are just a bit too perfect? Hey hasn’t anyone noticed your perfect kid? Well maybe you know your kid is not perfect, just a great kid with ordinary kid ways.  But how about all those parents out there (yes, you know them) who never shut up about their miracle baby who is soooo soooo perfect - well I have a book for them. Today’s guest Dale Hrabi has written a hilarious satire The Perfect Baby Handbook (www.perfectbabyhandbook.com)  that provides the much-needed comic relief from the perfection pressures of parenting. This is a fabulous book for every parent who knows they are normal and want to laugh at those who are over the top. Terrific gift for parents and one they will have a great time laughing at and take a lesson from as well.

And don’t forget to make good choices…
