Holiday Stress, Teens in Trouble and Cutting

December 15th, 2009

It Holiday Time! Yes, I know I didn’t have to tell you that, but what you may not realize is that kids, especially teens, feel holiday stress at this time of year just like we do. They worry about gifts, money, relationships and often family gatherings, especially in divorced families. To relieve stress at this time of year - and other times as well - some kids turn to cutting. Many adults are unaware of this and have no idea it is going on, or what triggers it.

I will be talking to Dr. D’Arcy Lyness who is the behavioral health editor for www.KidsHealth.org which is the best website for parents and kids of all ages, as most of you know. So join me to talk about cutting and what you need to know and holiday stress in general so you can really make good and informed choices this Holiday Season!

From Celebrated Songwriter to Novelist: Amy Foster

December 8th, 2009

Amy Foster is a successful songwriter writing hits for recording artists like Josh Groban, Diana Krall, Destiny’s Child and Andrea Bocelli. She may be best-known for her work with Grammy winning artist Michael Buble.

Given that her father is the legendary composer David Foster, it may be no surprise that she is so wonderfully successful in the music world. However,  writing is her true passion and she proves how good she is at it with her new novel, When Autumn Leaves (Overlook Press $14.95). This is a  magical book written with lyrical grace about a town of extraordinary women facing many of the struggles and real-life challenges that women face today. It is also funny and uplifting with a fantastical twist, that makes When Autumn Leaves a book you can’t put down.

Join me today to learn how Oprah encouraged Amy Foster (www.amysfoster.com) with her new book and how you can get a copy, so you can enjoy reading while you are making good choices ~

My guest today Dr. Joyce Cooper-Kahn has written a new book, Late Lost and Unprepared: A Parents’ Guide to Helping Children with Executive Functioning (www.latelostandunprepared.com), that offers strategies to help children who struggle with disorganization, impulse control, working memory, self-monitoring and other weaknesses. Executive functions are developmental abilities that help children manage life tasks and we will be talking today about some of the side effects of poor executive functioning.

If you think that this may be your child, listen in today so you can learn how to handle this and make good choices ~
