Did you know that a nation’s level of happiness is most assoicated with their level of health care? Universal health care may seem like a far off concept to Americans, but is a basic fact of life in every other industrialized country. It is time we had it here. As a nation we spend more than other countries and get less. We have groundbreaking medical technology and yet 47 million Americans are uninsured and many others go bankrupt because of health care costs. We have a health care crisis and an unhappy country.

My guest today Dr. Ellen R. Shaffer from Center for Policy Analysis (www.centerforpolicyanalysis.org) believes that we can build a change towards universal affordable quality health care and voters can support that change. As a woman I find it especially important that we all get the health care we need. Dr. Shaffer writes and lectures extensively on access to health care, women’s health and globalization. She served as senior health policy advisor to U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone from 1992 to 1995 and is on the executive board of the American Public Health Association.

Listen in today and learn what you need to know about universal health care and making it a reality, so you can make important choices for you, your family and our country ~

Today is the anniversary of the Virginia Tech shootings. A sad memory for this country and a tragic one for the families who lost loved ones and those who were injured. An unbearable sadness. But why do things like this keep happening and what can we do about it? I have had many experts on this topic on to discuss this and one of them is Daniel Gross who is the co-founder of PAX, Real Solutions to Gun Violence (www.paxusa.org) and creator of SPEAK UP a terrific school violence prevention program that includes 1-866-SPEAK-UP, a free national hotline for students to call anonymously to report weapon threats. Daniel is going to talk that and about the 10 warning signs of school shootings and what we as parents, students and community members should know and look for. Listen in today and learn what propels this violence and how to stop it before it happens again.

Also in the later part of the hour Lisa Ann from SpiritQuest (spiritquesthealingcenter.com) will be joining me to talk about the spiritual side of death and tragedy what we need to know. She is always full of warm and useful advice. So join me today and learn about how you and your family can make good choices.

School Violence. We hear so much about it and unfortunately see too much of it. What can we really do to prevent it? Why is this happening and how can we stop it before it happens?

We can help by not giving the shooter the fame they seek. Every time we mention the name of the shooter he is getting the attention he so desperately wants by doing these horrendous and highly visable displays of violence. Let’s Stop giving fame to school shooters!

Dr. Seifert(www.drkathyseifert.com) who is a psychotherapist and author of How Children Become Violent: Keeping Your Kids out of Gangs, Terrorist Organizations and Cults agrees with this and points out to us that this only produces copy-cat versions of more. We most stop giving them fame and attention if we want to stop this from continuing.

Dr. Kathy Seifert has been on with me before and she is amazingly helpful in explaining why so many young kids resort to violence, gangs or terrorism and what we need to know about this so we, as a society, can prevent it in the future. This is a topic that effects us all. It comes from video games because as our society mirrors what we see. We need to be armed with knowledge as we teach our children and ourselves to make good choices ~

So you think your child is growing up too fast? Maybe we do, though they don’t think they are. But still, underneath all that grown-up ‘tween veneer’ is your little kid who worries? Worries? About what you may wonder. Well, maybe not what you think they worry about. The opposite sex? Yes, but that is pretty far down on their list of worries. The number one worry is you - their parent. They worry about your health and second on the list? To find that out listen in today so you learn about all the concerns that your 10-14 year-old worries about. And most important, how you can talk to them - so they really listen to you.

Join me from 1-2 today when Dr. D’Arcy Lyness from KidsHealth.org will be on air talking about the survey they have done at KidsHealth (www.kidshealth.org) and the results. Remember that the way you talk to your growing tween is important to the information that you get from them. Hint: Don’t overreact - it may backfire.

Also joining me will be Port Jervis school psychologist Jody Hanlon to talk about their program - Living with Your Teen - which they have been offering classes on with the aid of Cornell Cooperative Extension (344-1234). For more tips tune in today and learn more about making good choices for you and your growing kids ~
